SEO Beginners Guide Part 1: What is SEO?

You might have the best looking site on the web today, but if you don’t employ some well-thought-out SEO basics, your creative web design may never be seen by anyone else ever again.

Why it matters

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It is the process by which you can make your website more appealing to search engines and attract more visitors to your site. Today, it can be more of a science than anything else, but before we go into it in too much detail, it is important that you know how a search engine works.

Google, Yahoo, Bing, and just about every other search engine worth its salt, operates on a complicated, and very secretive, search algorithm. It all starts with software programs, (often referred to as spiders), which crawl your site and take note of the key words and phrases that are used on it.

These findings are then reported back to the search operator who stores them on their servers, weights them according to relevance, and uses this data to help build a results page for users who use their search engine to look for information on the web.

So, what does all this mean for you? Well, it means that if you want your website to be seen by as many people as possible, you first need to make sure that it is rated well by search engines. This is harder than you might think, but fear not, for help is at hand.
